5. Describe your knowledge and involvement in the recent National Dialogue between and among National and Affiliates.

The National Dialogue has opened a new chapter of possibilities for Affiliates and for National. In New Mexico,
NMAEYC has become a significant presence. It is a partner and a contractor (e.g., responsible for T.E.A.C.H.®,
W.A.G.E.S.®, and other important initiatives) with state government, philanthropic foundations, and nationalorganizations. As a result, NMAEYC has grown from an all-volunteer organization operating “off the kitchen table” to a multimillion dollar organization with a full-time executive director, offices, meeting facilities, and staff.

Following National’s example, members throughout New Mexico have been engaged in dialogue to clarify their organizational mission and to become one statewide Affiliate. This process has been an opportunity to establish an organizational infrastructure and identity that is more culturally, linguistically, and demographically responsive. By taking advantage of the state Affiliate’s resources, chapters provide members with more meaningful experiences at the local level.

Like NAEYC, NMAEYC partners  with other organizations to increase  its capacity and fulfill its mission. Collaboration makes it possible, for example, for the annual NMAEYC conference to attract early educators from all early childhood systems and encourage them to view themselves as being part of one profession.

NMAEYC’s expansion and reform efforts are an indication of the opportunities that the National Dialogue holds. National’s challenge is to maintain the dialogue and remain open to the “entrepreneurial spirit.” This will enable National to continue its expansion efforts (e.g., the new Global Engagement Department) while at the same time supporting Affiliates’ efforts to make each member’s participation as meaningful as possible.
